Seven separate pavement areas needed repair inside an active Army depot in Chambersburg, PA, where vehicle movement and daily operations continued around the work zones. RDS Paving & Sealcoating returned for a previous customer to complete the asphalt repairs on an immediate-turnaround basis.
Working Within an Active, High-Traffic Facility
The setting shaped the job from the start. These were not seven repairs located in one isolated section of pavement. The work was spread across an operating facility, so our crew had to account for the activity taking place around each repair area.
Vehicles continued moving through the site, and normal facility operations remained part of the environment we were working in. The repairs therefore had to be carried out with the surrounding areas in mind while minimizing disruption.
Controlled access and active traffic also meant the seven asphalt patches could not be approached as completely separate jobs. Each repair location was part of one project taking place within an operating facility.
Completing Seven Asphalt Patches on a Tight Turnaround
The project called for quick coordination with the contractor and completion of all seven repair areas. Our scope included:
- Coordinating the repair work on a tight turnaround
- Removing compromised pavement from the repair areas
- Repairing seven separate asphalt patches
- Working within the requirements of the active facility
- Restoring the repaired areas with the goal of returning them to normal use
With several locations included in the same scope, keeping the work organized was important. Each repair area had to be addressed while remaining aligned with the larger project rather than being handled as an unrelated fix.
The immediate-turnaround requirement also put an emphasis on clear communication as the work moved forward. Our responsibility was to complete the defined repairs while continuing to account for the conditions around each work area.
A Previous Customer Called With a Different Kind of Need
This project came from a previous customer, but the request was different from a large paving or sealcoating project planned well in advance. This time, seven localized pavement areas needed attention on a much shorter turnaround.
Some projects involve larger scopes and extensive planning. Others begin with a call about several pavement problems that need to be addressed quickly. This Chambersburg project fell into the second category.
The physical repair scope was relatively contained, but the work still called for a coordinated response. We needed to reconnect with the customer, coordinate with the contractor, address seven defined repair areas, and complete the work within the conditions of the active site.
For this return visit, the job was clear: respond to an immediate pavement need, complete the seven asphalt repairs, and work toward getting the affected areas back into normal use.
