When a Hershey, PA property owner called us to repair a section of worn asphalt, they expected a straightforward paving project. But what looked like a simple surface issue turned out to be something much more serious.

Our inspection revealed the beginnings of a sinkhole—an underground problem that could have worsened quickly if left untreated.

At RDS Paving & Sealcoating, we know that asphalt issues often hide bigger problems beneath the surface.

This project is a great example of how taking the time to dig deeper (literally) can prevent ongoing damage and restore peace of mind for property owners.

A Call for Asphalt Repair Turns Into Something Bigger

The client first reached out to us with concerns about cracks and wear in their asphalt.

At first glance, it seemed like typical damage from use and weather. But our estimator noticed signs that something more serious was going on. After a closer inspection, we determined the issue was likely a small sinkhole forming below the pavement.

Sinkholes in Hershey aren’t uncommon, especially with the area’s limestone-rich soil and underground springs. What begins as a small soft spot can quickly compromise the stability of an entire paved surface.

Ignoring the warning signs could have left the client with ongoing drainage issues and repeated asphalt failures.

Digging Deeper Reveals the True Problem

Once our crew opened up the asphalt, we confirmed our suspicions—the small sinkhole was much larger than it first appeared. The source of the problem was an underground spring, steadily washing away soil and weakening the ground beneath the pavement.

To fix it correctly, we had to go down to the root of the problem.

Our team drained the excess water, stabilized the area with stone, and then poured concrete to provide a strong, lasting base. Only after the ground was secure did we move forward with paving.

Building a Strong Surface That Lasts

With the sinkhole repaired and the base reinforced, we installed four inches of fresh asphalt over the area. This final step restored the surface to a smooth, durable condition while ensuring the ground below would no longer cause issues.

The client was thrilled with the results. Not only was the visible asphalt damage repaired, but the underlying drainage problem was eliminated. Today, the property has no signs of water intrusion or settling, and the pavement is ready to handle everyday use for years to come.

Protecting Hershey Properties from Hidden Hazards

This project highlights something important: not every asphalt problem is only skin-deep.

In Hershey, PA, underground conditions like springs and shifting soil can quickly turn into costly damage if not addressed properly.

By catching the sinkhole early, we were able to protect the property from long-term structural problems and give the owner lasting confidence in their pavement.
