A longtime customer in Hershey contacted RDS Paving & Sealcoating about a concrete sidewalk between her garage and back door. She also had water puddling in the backyard and wanted us to look at that problem. We replaced the old sidewalk and regraded the ground on both sides of it, adding topsoil to help the yard drain.
A Sidewalk Request and Water Pooling in the Yard
She’d been our customer since 2015. When she called for an estimate, she explained where she wanted the sidewalk installed and brought up the standing water in the yard. The issue was in the same backyard where the new walkway would go, so the ground beside the proposed route needed attention as well.
Our estimator met with her at the property and looked at the water issue alongside the sidewalk request. We offered a topsoil option for the grass areas on either side of the route she had in mind. That gave us a way to include the yard around the walk in the estimate, instead of focusing only on the concrete she wanted replaced.
Replacing the Sidewalk and Regrading the Yard
We removed the old concrete sidewalk and installed its replacement between the garage and the house. The new walk follows one side of the backyard, from the paved area by the garage toward the back door. That placed the walkway beside the areas where we also had grading work to complete.
On both sides of the new walkway, we removed the existing grass to make room for grading. We changed the slope of those areas and added topsoil where the ground had been reworked. The new grade was intended to help water drain instead of collecting in the backyard as the homeowner had described.
How the Sidewalk and Grading Turned Out
The finished sidewalk gives the homeowner a concrete path from the garage toward her back door, with regraded soil beside it. She was thrilled with how the sidewalk looked and how it flowed between the buildings. She was also pleased that the regrading helped with the drainage issue she’d raised when she first contacted us.
