Beside a block retaining wall at a McDonald’s in Harrisburg, PA, cracks crossed the asphalt along a curved vehicle route. RDS Paving & Sealcoating sealed those cracks at night, along with others near the marked entrance and exit and across the parking lot.

One of our vendors referred the customer to us. They own 10 McDonald’s locations throughout the region and requested crack sealing at each property.

The Curve and the Divided Access Lanes

Along the curve, we sealed cracks crossing the asphalt near the yellow-painted curb and retaining wall. Some treatment lines bend and branch across the paved route rather than following a single straight path.

At the entrance, sealed cracks cross the driving area near a directional arrow and a textured center divider. The marked exit has other treated cracks near the STOP marking and painted arrows.

Parking Areas With Different Crack Patterns

The crack sealing extended into the street-facing parking area. One treated line branches near a rounded curb, while another runs across a driving aisle toward marked parking spaces. Closer to the restaurant entrance, we also sealed cracks in the building-side parking area, including asphalt near accessible parking markings and a striped access aisle.

Crack location and direction are useful details in evaluating pavement condition. PennDOT’s guide to pavement distress identifies both, along with crack severity, as relevant to assessing asphalt damage.

Choosing the Work Window at Harrisburg

Customers use the property by car and on foot, while employees and delivery vehicles also need access. Peak business hours are another consideration when scheduling pavement work at a restaurant. Our goal was to complete the crack sealing with as little interference as possible, so we performed the Harrisburg job at night rather than assuming regular daytime hours would suit the property.

The customer’s request involved 10 restaurants, and the traffic patterns, operating conditions, and access needs may differ at each one.

Planning across the properties called for considering when crews could be accommodated and how to limit unnecessary travel and mobilization. Each location still needed individual attention, with communication and scheduling suited to its operations.

The customer was impressed with how we scheduled work around their business hours at Harrisburg and was very pleased with the completed crack sealing.
